How a rockwall texture job is done, step by step
Grace Rockwall site team · Updated 2026-10-22
Short answer
A proper texture job has six steps: a site visit and measurement, wall repair, primer, the texture coat, a weather top coat, and a final walk-through with a written warranty. Skipping preparation is the most common reason finishes fail early.
1. Site visit and sample patch
We visit the property, measure the wall, check its condition and bring product samples. A small sample patch of your chosen finish and colour goes on your own wall, and you receive a written quote.
2. Wall repair
Cracks are filled, loose paint and flaking plaster are removed, and damp patches are treated first. A texture is only as sound as the surface under it. See why seepage must be fixed first.
3. Primer
A bonding primer goes on so the texture grips the wall. This step is invisible in the finished result and decisive for how long it lasts.
4. The texture coat
The coat is applied and worked by trained applicators. For graffiti the surface is scraped while wet, for Sand Tex it is worked to an even sand grain, for rockwall a stone texture is built up. The look depends on the hand, which is why experienced applicators matter.
5. Weather top coat
A protective top coat such as Weather Shield seals the finish against sun and rain.
6. Handover and warranty
We walk through the finished wall with you, hand over a care guide and issue the written 10-year warranty.
Questions to ask any contractor
- Will you apply a sample patch on my wall before the job?
- Is the quote in writing, and what does it cover?
- Who actually does the work: your own team or sub-contractors?
- What preparation do you do, and what happens if the wall is damp?
- Is the warranty in writing, and what does it cover?
Care after the job
Wash gently with water and a soft brush about once a year. Avoid pressure washers and harsh chemicals, which can damage the texture.
